Quiz corner wishes you a warmer-than-Antarctic winter break

We’ll miss you while we’re on break… but we’ll be back soon! Meanwhile, check to see if you’ve won the last prize of the semester.

Last week’s question:

Our Holiday Gift Guide spotlights products with that unique UW-Madison flair — some more unique than others. For the particle physics lover in your life, you can buy a snazzy t-shirt featuring Bert, one of the highest-energy neutrinos ever seen. What cold-sounding collaboration sells the Bert Shirt? (Hint: it’s in the logo on the back.)

icecube-collaborationThe answer is IceCube, or (more accurately) the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center. After construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory finished (at the South Pole!), the name was changed to WIPAC, reflecting a broader variety of projects.

Incidentally, the Bert Shirt is available for a modest $15 in both crew neck and longer v-neck styles. Who says physicists aren’t fashionable?

At least one of you didn’t know UW-Madison was involved in this. Wait until you find out about the nuclear reactor and the dermestarium.

This week’s winners are Brian Shore and Weng-Him Cheung, chosen at random from all correct responses. Congrats! You can come to 28 Bascom Hall to pick up your prize: a fabulous UW coffee mug.

That’s it for us this fall semester. Stay tuned for our first edition of The Weekly on January 20, 2016 (seriously,2016???) for more chances to win more free swag.

Thanks for reading, and have a great winter break!
