New Bascom staircase to open in early October

It won't be much longer until you can actually walk up and down that big staircase being installed at the bottom of Bascom Hill. Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on the new entrance to the hill from State Street, and a campus official says it will be open the first week of October — with completion of the entire mall following later in the month.

Need a voter ID?

The rules around voting in the Nov. 4 election may seem confusing, but we're here to help. UW students are eligible to receive a free voter ID card at the Wiscard office in Union South. Related: Learn more about registration and Voter ID rules.

Holy cow! The freshman class at UW-Madison is the third largest in school history, with 6,264 students, and features the second-largest number of Wisconsin residents in the past 13 years. This year's class includes 3,750 students from Wisconsin.

Free flu shots available for students starting Friday

Starting Friday, Sept. 26, University Health Services (UHS) will once again offer free seasonal flu shots for all registered students. Check the dates, times and locations of the clinics, and remember to bring your student ID. It's important to get vaccinated every year —  protection from a flu shot only lasts six to nine months.
