Are you ready for graduation?

There are fewer than 40 days until commencement. And whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, everyone who intends to graduate in May needs to follow the steps to prepare for the ceremony. Check out this timeline.

  • Academic attire rental ends tomorrow – April 6. You can rent your cap and gown online or in person at the service counter in the University Bookstore at 711 State Street or HSLC.
  • Last official day for reserving academic attire is April 6 (In store only). After April 6, the late rental period is in effect for May graduation. You can still reserve academic attire in store with a late fee and over the phone with a $10 service fee in addition to the late fee through April 20.
  • “Photos with Abe” will take place April 26 and April 28. A donation of $10 to the Student Campaign is recommended; students will receive a professional photo to take home.
    • There will also be more Graduate Portrait sessions on the following dates:
      • April 6 at Union South, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
      • April 19 at Memorial Union, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
      • April 25 at Memorial Union, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
      • May 2 at Memorial Union, 8 a.m.–8 p.m.

  • Walk-in cap and gown rental period begins May 3 for bachelor’s candidates. Starting at 11 a.m., candidates walk-in, order, pay rental fee and walk-in fee, and pick up academic attire at 711 State St. Continues through May 12. Only a limited amount of academic attire will be available for walk-in customers. Available on a first come, first serve basis*
  • Walk-in cap and gown rental beginsMay 10 for faculty and master’s and doctoral candidates. At 2 p.m., walk-in rentals will begin and continue through 7 p.m. Thursday May 11.
  • Pre-reserved academic attire is available for pick-up on May 10-11. Academic attire available for pick at the University Bookstore on State Street from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Attend the recognition event hosted by your school, college, department or division May 11 through May 13. Check the commencement website for the full schedule for all commencement celebrations.
  • May 12 academic attire pick-up: From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., distribution of pre-reserved attire at the bookstore; attire that has not been picked up by 11 a.m. will be taken to the Kohl Center Friday night and Camp Randall Saturday morning for pick-up there (one hour before the ceremony).
  • Doctoral and Medical Professional Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on May 12. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. at the Kohl Center. Graduates are asked to be seated by 5:10 p.m.
  • Academic attire pick-up concludes at noon on May 13.  Attire that has not been previously picked up will be available for pick up at Camp Randall, Gate 5, starting at 11 a.m. Academic attire pick-up concludes at noon.
  • Law, Master’s and Bachelor’s Ceremony at noon on May 13. Gates open at Camp Randall Stadium at 10 a.m. and graduate are asked to be seated by 11:15 a.m.
  • Return academic attire May 12 to May 16. Return gown at the Kohl Center immediately after the ceremony Friday or the University Bookstore on State Street during business hours.
    • Bachelor’s – return gown, keep cap and tassel.
    • Faculty, Doctors and Masters – return gown and hood, keep cap and tassel.
