Dept. of Education’s Office for Civil Rights to hold campus ‘office hours’

An important opportunity for students to provide input on topics such as sexual harassment and sexual violence will take place during the week of Nov. 2-6, with a campus visit from representatives of the federal Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

OCR, part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the federal agency responsible for enforcing Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination by educational institutions that receive federal financial assistance, including UW-Madison.

UW-Madison is committed to addressing sexual harassment and sexual violence on campus.  Existing efforts include Tonight, the required undergraduate education program addressing sexual assault, consent, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking; the AAU-affiliated Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct; and the proposed revisions to the student non-academic misconduct code.

During the visit, OCR will hold “office hours” in which students have the opportunity to provide commentary about UW-Madison’s procedures or discuss personal experiences (if they so choose).

Confidentiality is assured. OCR may share general insights with UW-Madison based upon student input, but will not disclose any student’s identity without that student’s consent.  Individuals who speak with OCR staff are not required to share their name with OCR if they do not wish to do so.

In addition, Title IX prohibits UW-Madison from retaliating against students and employees for sharing information with OCR.

Students are welcome to drop in during any of OCR’s “office hours” listed below.  Office hours will take place in 187 Bascom Hall during the following times:

  • Monday, Nov. 2: 1:30–3 p.m. and 4:30–5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 3: 10–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 4: 9:30–11 a.m. and 1:30–2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5: 9:30–11 a.m. and 1:30–2:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 6: 9:30–11 a.m. and 1:30–3 p.m.

To schedule a specific or alternative time or location, please contact Amy A. Truelove, Senior Equal Opportunity Specialist, at or (312) 730-1610.

OCR hopes to visit the UW-Madison campus again during the Spring 2016 semester, holding additional office hours at that time in various locations.
